Singapore - Meat on a stick....always good.

In the UK we just don't do 'meat on a stick' as well as other nations. Why this is I just don't know. I'm sure the first man to cook took meat and put it on a stick over fire so the art of 'meat on a stick' should be inherent in all of us. The king of the food group 'meat on a stick'..? It has to be satay especially if served with a vibrant peanut sauce. I think this is another Singapore national 'dish'. I'm not sure what the rules are on the number of 'national dishes' a country can have but I think the Singaporeans are pushing this to the limit.
So breaking it down into the two constituent parts. The meat part and the sauce part.
The satay here was 5 sticks of chicken and 5 of pork freshly cooked on a nearby grill. Overall, maybe a bit too chewy but it was coated in a glorious sticky marinade which enhanced the experience. The chicken was much better than the pork.
The peanut sauce was fantastic. Sauce....gravy....jus....call it what you like but sauce is crucial to culinary experts such as myself. (Nigella has aptly demonstrated the importance of sauce with her constant finger dipping every episode). The sauce here was a winner and not in short supply. A strong peanut flavour with a crunchy texture and consistency.
I think I'll be back to this place to try one of the other meats on offer, which according to the sign includes.... mutton, beef, ostrich, ketupat (without the use of google.....who can tell me what ketupat is?). Maybe I'll take the ipod and listen to some music to enhance the experience further? Any song suggestions welcome.
Finally....a surprise lurked under the satay sticks. Yes....hidden amongst some slices of red onion....there was cucumber!!
