Singapore - The Cucumber paradox....the view of a local

So taking a 4.5 hour coach to Melaka in Malaysia I managed to get many good food tips from Joanna, a local Singaporean woman. Well with a 4.5 hour coach ride you have time to burn. Obviously question #1 on my mind was the cucumber paradox; but it's not something I could ask straight away without her thinking I was some sort of nut-job. Instead, I had to wait until we were well over the Causeway and into cruising north through Malaysia before asking the question on why every dish has a serving of cucumber. The answer? Health reasons. It supposedly is a balance against the high cholesterol contained in the chicken? A yin/yang type thing going on it seems. Any nutritionists out there think this makes sense?

A more worrying 'view of a local' is that Tiger beer is not drunk by the locals. They don't like the taste and much prefer a Heineken or Carlsberg...!! So for the past 4 days I've been trying to blend in like a local but instead I might as well have stamped 'Tourist' on my forehead.

As normal, right next door to the hotel, I found this superb Hainanese chicken rice stall in an outdoor food centre on Orchard Road as the quest for the perfect chicken rice continued. I'd already walked past it many times without giving it much of a glance. The combo for only SGD$10.80 provided a bowl of chicken rice, a plate of white chicken meat, a plate of pak choi, and a bowl of soup. This combined with a big bottle of tiger for SGD$7 make the perfect meal and bought equilibrium back to the world after the visit to Clarke Quay. (This meal was obviously pre local tips feed back session). Well the rice and chicken were superb. A very flavoursome rice and a nice portion o chicken which was tender and moist. The pak choi was not so good, overcooked and a bland sauce accompanying, but this is a minor point. Finally, note sneaky tactics whereby the cucumber in this dish was initially hidden from view beneath the chicken before exposing itself as the meal developed.
